What's a Cassette?

The compact cassette is a small plastic shell that holds a long ribbon of magnetic tape wound between two miniature reels. Philips introduced it in 1963, and for the next four decades it was how the world recorded, shared, and carried its music.

How it actually works

Inside the shell, a thin polyester tape is coated with tiny magnetic particles. As the tape is drawn past the recording head, the head rearranges those particles into a magnetic pattern that mirrors the sound. On playback the process runs in reverse: the play head reads the pattern and turns it back into an electrical signal, which your speakers turn back into music. Two reels do the carrying, one feeding tape out while the other winds it up, which is why you can watch them turn while a tape plays.

Sides, lengths, and that satisfying click

A cassette has two sides, A and B, so you flip it halfway through. Lengths are named for their total minutes: a C-60 holds about thirty minutes a side, a C-90 about forty five. When a side finishes, the player stops with a mechanical click that anyone who grew up with tape can still hear in their memory.

Type I to Type IV

Not all tape is the same. The formulation of the magnetic coating determines how clean and detailed the sound can be:

  • Type I (ferric): the everyday standard, warm and forgiving.
  • Type II (chrome): crisper highs, a favorite for mixtapes.
  • Type III (ferrichrome): a short-lived hybrid of the two.
  • Type IV (metal): the premium formulation, prized for its clarity and dynamic range.

Why it mattered

The cassette put recording in ordinary hands. You could tape a song off the radio, dub a friend's album, or build a mixtape one careful track at a time. It was cheap, portable, and personal, and it turned listeners into makers. That is the spirit this site is built to celebrate.
